Solar-powered video surveillance systems
Solar-powered video surveillance systems
The use of solar panels is a modern solution to the problem of energy conservation and reduction of consumer energy costs. Photovoltaic cells are already used in many industries, now they have reached the field of telecommunications and communications. In particular, solar panels are increasingly being used as the main energy source for the equipment of autonomous video surveillance systems.
Pros and cons of using
The use of
solar panels for video cameras is a compromise solution with advantages and
disadvantages. Among the first, the following are distinguished as the main
ones:
autonomy of
functioning. This parameter allows you to use cameras in hard-to-reach locations
with no power grids;
ease of
installation and maintenance;
the
possibility of hidden installation.
The
following factors are called the disadvantages of such models:
higher cost
in comparison with conventional counterparts;
the need
for an additional source of energy to ensure continuous operation, since the
solar cell is not always stable due to a number of reasons: poor illumination,
poor location, cloudy weather.
Design
features of solar-powered video surveillance installation
The system
design consists of several main parts. In addition to the camera itself and
photo panels, the following elements are mandatory:
an
electronic unit that runs on one of the computer platforms;
memory
cards.
In
addition, a specific model can be equipped with a variety of sensors, a swing
mechanism, and online streaming of information.
Principle of operation
To connect
the camera, you first need to choose the right place. In this case, the degree
of shading should be taken into account so that the solar panel has sufficient
access to light. The photo panel itself can be built-in or remote.
Once
connected, the camcorder receives energy stored in the process of how the solar
cell works. Also, electricity can come from an additional battery included in
the kit.
Thus, the
camera captures the space allocated to it and saves the recordings to the
memory card. More sophisticated video surveillance systems with a data
transmission unit and tracking sensors transmit information to the operator's
monitor and even raise an alarm.
Application area
Due to
technical features, autonomous video surveillance systems on solar batteries
are used where conventional equipment of this kind cannot be used. In
particular, they are used for:
control of
forest park areas and the movement of wild animals;
protection
of construction sites;
tracking
agricultural facilities and industrial enterprises with no available power
grids;
monitoring
traffic in remote locations.
